Somatic Experiencing + Nervous System Regulation
Beginner Course
Understand how the mind + body work together.
What IS Somatic Experiencing and Nervous System Regualation?
Somatic Experiencing is an approach to processing emotions through the nervous system (as opposed to just the thinking brain).
Because have you ever felt like you KNOW all the logical things to think, but they simply don’t touch the part of you that FEELS hopeless, stuck, or afraid?
There is often a disconnect between what the mind understands and what the body has yet to release.
This course will teach you the foundations of:
why everyone is talking about “nervous system regulation” these days — and how it’s the new “emotional intelligence”
what nervous system regulation tools are actually for instead of using it as another wellness culture tactic
feeling safer in the body (our foundational sense of safety)
self-compassion for why our actions sometimes run counter to our values/goals (and how to work with this)
hearing how your body is speaking to you through a language of its own so we’re not constantly overriding it with our logical mind.
This course is relevant if you are doing food/body image recovery work, have already done food/body image recovery work, or have yet to do food/body image recovery work.

This course addresses the cognitive and the somatic. If you find that somatic practices are activating for you, the invitation is to take a break or stop the practice. This course is NOT intended to replace 1:1 trauma therapy. Please consult with your trauma-informed therapist if you aren’t sure if this course is appropriate for you.

Somatic work and nervous system regulation go hand-in-hand with recovery from disordered eating. This course will not “cure” binge eating, however. This course is recommended to work in conjunction with an ED-specialized program as applicable. I found that nervous system regulation elevated my healing post-recovery, but it can also be supportive pre- or during a recovery journey.

This course is different from my other courses because it offers a broader perspective of healing; it is NOT a food/body image specific course. While regulation does have a lot to do with food & body image, this course is not geared primarily towards that.
However, because my areas of expertise largely do focus on food and body image, my course does offer an integration of these concepts alongside nervous system healing. Conversations and examples will likely move in that direction at times during the course. Our final session will be dedicated to this application.
When choosing between courses, you want to keep in mind who you resonate with as a practitioner. Every course is different because every person has a different dynamic and lens that they bring to the course. If you resonate with my content in general, you will likely resonate with this course!

I am currently in training to become a Somatic Experiencing therapist with SEI (Somatic Experiencing International). From the SEI website:
“We are the leading authority on the SE™ method and is a major provider of training and educational programs. SE is a body-oriented therapeutic model that helps heal trauma and other stress disorders. Developed by Peter Levine, Ph.D., it is the result of the multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics, with more than 45 years of successful clinical application.”
Please note that I am currently in training at the Advanced Level. This is a foundations course designed to help you understand the basics of nervous system theory and practice, but application for individual healing is complex and unique to the individual.
